A partial ordering in the class of observables (∼ positive operator-valued measures, introduced by Davies and by Ludwig) is explored. The ordering is interpreted as a form of nonideality, and it allows one to compare ideal and nonideal versions of the same observable. Optimality is defined as maximality in the sense of the ordering. The framework gives a generalization of the usual (implicit) definition of self-adjoint operators as optimal observables (von Neumann), but it can, in contrast to this latter definition, (...) be justified operationally. The nonideality notion is compared to other quantum estimation theoretic methods. Measures for the amount of nonideality are derived from information theory. (shrink)

The problem of joint measurement of incompatible observables is investigated. Measurements are represented by positive operator-valued measures. A quantitative notion of inaccuracy is defined. It is shown that within this framework joint inaccurate measurements are possible for arbitrary maximal projection-valued measures on finite-dimensional spaces. The accuracy of such measurements is limited, as is shown by an inaccuracy inequality we derive. This new type of uncertainty relation can be unambiguously interpreted as referring to measurement precision rather than preparative quality. Die naturrechtlichen Begründungsversuche der Menscherechte sind nicht schlüssig. Statt die Menschenrechte aus Freiheit rechtfertigen zu können, wird Freiheit als Resultat eines liberalen Verrechtlichungsprozesses gesehen. Die politische Forderung nach globaler Durchsetzung der Menschenrechte macht also aus dem Modell der liberalen Gesellschaft eine in ihren Augen alternativlose Freiheitsordnung, die auch mit Gewalt durchgesetzt werden dürfte.

Die Herausforderung der modernen Technik für die ethische Orientierung des menschlichen Handelns wurde und wird in immer brisanterer Form zum Thema einer Theorie von einer erweiterten Verantwortlichkeit. Besonders Jonas’ Buch Das Prinzip Verantwortung ist hierzu als Vorreiter gewürdigt worden. Es war in der Tat Jonas, dem es gelang, mit seinem Buch weit über die Fachzirkel hinaus die größere Öffentlichkeit zu erreichen. Er stellte zu Recht fest, durch das Übermaß der wissenschaftlich multiplizierten technologischen Macht wachse dem Menschen »eine neue, nie zuvor (...) erträumte Dimension der Verantwortung « zu. Resumen: En muchas lenguas las cláusulas adverbiales iniciales presentan una repetición del predicado de la oración anterior, lo que se conoce como enlace tail-head. Este trabajo busca describir las construcciones de eth del quichua santiagueño de acuerdo con dos parámetros: a) el grado de solapamiento semántico entre los predicados de la construcción de eth, y b) el grado de integración eventiva de la adverbial inicial con la cláusula principal. El primer parámetro permite identificar construcciones verbatim -con repetición exacta del verbo (...) anterior- y no verbatim -sin repetición exacta-. El segundo parámetro se manifiesta en la forma que adopta la cláusula “cabeza”. Así, se identificaron, por un lado, una forma converbal y, por el otro, cláusulas con los sufijos del sistema de conmutación de la referencia. La interacción entre estos dos parámetros muestra que las diferentes construcciones de eth poseen diversas funciones discursivas, en particular para la coherencia temática.: In many languages preposed adverbial clauses repeat the previous verb or predicate, which phenomenon has been termed tail-head linkage. This paper aims to describe THL constructions in Santiagueño Quichua according to two parameters: a) the degree of semantic overlap between the predicates of the THL constructions, and b) the degree of event integration of the preposed adverbial with its main clause. The first parameter allows the identification of verbatim constructions -with exact repetition of the previous predicate- and non verbatim constructions -without exact repetition-. The second parameter manifests itself in the form the head clause might adopt, where it is a converb or it takes switch reference suffixes. After more than a decade of intensive discussion, the concept of »sustainable development still remains rather vague. However, a broad consent exists that sustainability implies intragenerational as well as intergenerational equity. Therefore, a policy for sustainability has to go beyond pareto-superiority and to face both queastions of distribution and of scale. This reveals that at the core of sustainability ethical problems are involved. Although the notion of sustainability cannot be used as a concrete recipe, as Karl Homann correctly observes, it (...) has tobe clarified in ordertobe a useful regulative idea. (shrink)

Memoirs of the German Jewish philosopher Hans Jonas, as told to Rachel Salamander. Jonas was born in 1903 in Mönchengladbach to a wealthy, assimilated family. In 1918 he became involved in Zionist activity. A student, at first, of Husserl, he moved to Marburg to study with Heidegger in 1924. There he began a life-long friendship with Hannah Arendt. In 1933 Jonas immigrated to Palestine. In 1940 he joined the Jewish Brigade of the British army, and served in North Africa (...) and Italy. From there he went to Germany in 1945, where he found out that his mother had perished in Auschwitz. In 1949, Jonas immigrated to Canada, and in 1955 to New York. His views on the social and ethical problems created by technology have greatly inspired the green movement. Pp. 129-161 deal with Jonas' emigration from Germany; pp. 299-309 trace his philisophical and personal settling of accounts with Heidegger; pp. 339-347 present his views on the concept of God after Auschwitz.
